2007 First Spouse Coins

The United States Mint began it's First Spouse Coin in 2007 by releasing 1/2-oz. 10 dollar gold coins which features the likenesses of each First Lady, released in the order in which they served our great nation. The inaugural series featured Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison.

Depicted on the obverse of each coin is the name and portrait of the First Spouse, their names, the dates and order of their term in the White House, and the year in which the coin was minted. The signatures “In God We Trust” and “Liberty.” are also engraved into the front of each coin. The First Spouse gold coins will be issued by the United States Mint on roughly the schedule of release as the popular $1 Presidential Coin Program.

In addition to the $10 Gold Coins, bronze duplicate editions of the First Spouse Coins are released to the public by the United States Mint.

Every release has a differing reverse design displaying an symbolic image of a moment of significance their life. Also displayed on the reverse are “The United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” “$10,” “1/2 oz.” and “.9999 Fine Gold" which are stamped into the coin to signify the coin's country of issue and face value, along with the weight and gold content.

On the rare occasion that a President served his term in office without a First Lady, the coin will be created displaying a depiction of Lady Liberty as she would have been depicted on a coin produced during the appropriate time period. Also a scene is depicted on the coin showcasing a moment of importance in the life of that President.
