2008 First Spouse Coins
The 2008 First Spouse Coins were created to honor our Nation’s beloved first spouses through the issue of one-half ounce $10 gold coins which depict the likenesses of each First Lady, and released in the order in which each first spouse served. Along with the portraits of the famous spouses, the coins obverse will feature names and dates, including the years of their term during which they served as first spouse and the year when the coins were minted.
Each coin is also inscripted with "In God We Trust" and "Liberty" on the obverse. The reverse features a unique design for each release along with a scene capturing a defining moment in the life of each spouse. The terms "The United States of America," "E Pluribus Unum," "$10," "1/2 oz." and ".9999 Fine Gold" are also etched into each coin representing the coin's country of origin, the coin's nominal face value, weight and gold content.
The 2008 First Spouse Coins include: Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Andrew Jackson’s Liberty, and Martin Van Buren’s Liberty.
The obverse of the first two coins depict an image of each First Spouse, while the obverse of the Andrew Jackson coin features the Capped Bust Half Dollar Liberty version, and the obverse of the Martin Van Buren coin showcases Liberty from the classic Liberty Seated Dime.
