On April 2, 1792, Americans witnessed the passage of the Mint Act. This important Act led to the creation of Philadelphia's mint, and paved the way for the production of the currency that is presently used by the United States today. Thomas Jefferson is the original founder of the coin classification system, and was adamant that the United States have it's own personal mint in operation. When the 1792 Mint Act passed, it brought Jefferson's visions for the coinage system into reality, and established the first legitimate mint in the country. It also set the United States' dollar value at 24.75 gold grains.

The United States Mint is charged with the responsibility of creating an adequate number of coins in order for the country to do business. In addition, the mint must maintain the security of the country's precious metals. Most of the gold owned by the United States is secured in Fort Knox in the state of Kentucky. The Mint must also pass out coins to the Federal Reserve financial institutions. Finally, any damaged coins are taken back by the mint and re-minted.

The United States Mint was granted its independence from the government in 1799. In 1835, then-president Andrew Jackson approved the creation of mint operations to be based in New Orleans, Louisiana, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dahlonega, Georgia. Following the Civil War, however, each one of these branches became defunct. The Mint was incorporated into the Department of the Treasury in 1873, and its main office was established in Washington D.C., which is where it stands today. Six locations around the United States currently house branches of the mint. Fort Knox, West Point, Denver, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and San Francisco are where the branches have been established.

Today, the country depends on the United States Mint more than ever. Investors are embracing silver, gold and platinum bullion as dependable avenues to keep their assets secure, as citizens are worried about the lagging economy and falling dollar value.

First Spouse Coin Program

Produced by the United States Mint beginning in 2007, the First Spouse Coin series introduced a new program to coin collectors and investors which commemorates the great women of the Oval Office. This program compliments current program which issues the Presidential $1 Coin honoring the historical Presidents Of The United States. This release gives the United States an opportunity to honor America's remarkable first spouses through the release of 1/2 ounce $10 gold coins detailing their likenesses, released in the order that they served the nation as first spouse.

The First Spouse Coin has an obverse design featuring realistic portraits of the first spouses of the United States. Inscripted on the coin's front are the spouses’ names, the year the coin was issued, the order and years during which the term(s) were served as the First Spouse. The inscriptions 'In God We Trust and 'Liberty' are also included on the obverse. The reverse of each coin shows a design that is reflective of the spouse's life and historical role. Inscriptions on the reverse include E Pluribus Unum - The United States of America - $10 - .9999 Fine Gold - 1/2 OZ. The composition and content of each bullion coin will be a 24-karat, 0.9999 fine gold, similar in makeup to the current Buffalo Gold Bullion coin.

On the few occasions that a President served in office without a first spouse, the coin is released instead with an image of Liberty depicted on the obverse as she may have been featured on a coin that was in circulation at that time, along with symbolic images on the reverse representing themes of that particular President's influence on the White House, society, or culture.

The United States Mint has let it be known that there will be no release featuring the coins in a set and will be offering them for sale on a piece-by-piece basis, with both proof and uncirculated versions being made available, with their release corresponding to the release of the Presidential Dollar coins.

The Mint has also announced that it will be releasing duplicates of each of the First Spouse coins in bronze medal versions also.
